For Unbound, I created an installation consisting of five suspended, life-sized, vertical images of church windows printed on voile. These blurred representations of stained glass, featuring flowers and landscapes, are arranged to create the sensation of standing within a chapel. The title draws inspiration from Claude Debussy’s composition La cathédrale engloutie, based on an ancient Breton myth of a submerged cathedral off the coast of the legendary city of Ys.
Ys was a city built on reclaimed land, safeguarded by a dike. As the city descended into moral decay—marked by luxury, corruption, greed, and vanity—a catastrophic storm struck, engulfing Ys, drowning its inhabitants, and submerging the once-great city beneath the sea. The story of Ys remains strikingly relevant today.
JanKnegt Gallery participated once again at Unseen, showing new work alongside some of my earlier pieces.
I continued with the ‘Waves’ series resulting in ‘Ocean’ and ‘Stream’. The first series can be found here.
